How to Transition Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

Okay everyone, I don't know if you've heard, but fall is coming up. *Please read that sentence with the heavy sarcasm with which it was intended. If you had already rolled your eyes at my assumed stupidity, please roll them in the opposite direction so as to undo your mistake. Thank you.*

As much as I love fall, and there is just so much to love about it, there is one thing that I simply can't stand about it. It ends summer. How terribly, horribly rude and inconsiderate of fall? Does it realize the pain it inflicts by forcing me to fold up my pretty swimsuits, knowing that they will be neglected for about nine months? That's a ridiculously long time, as anyone who has gestated a tiny human can attest.

Speaking of offspring, the commencement of fall also acts as a warning signal, letting me know that my days in the sun with my girls are coming to an end and it won't be long before I am stuck inside with those two little devils... um, I mean angels... for weeks on end.

It also makes me realize that I have not taken ample opportunity of the warmth and access to the sun's rays to develop my tan. In fact my tan is nonexistent, so there's nothing to "develop" in the first place. That's how much I've neglected it. But then I soothe myself by looking at pictures of malignant melanoma and I can once again appreciate my vampiric degree of paleness.

Despite these offenses, I just can't stay upset with fall. It's just too fantastic. For one thing, I can finally pull out my gold leaf monogrammed Anthropologie mug and fill it with hot chocolate (which I'm not crazy about but feel obligated to drink because I bought the aforementioned mug) instead of with orange juice (which felt almost sinful.)

And of course, there's fall fashion. I get all warm and fuzzy just thinking of the tubs of sweaters, jackets, and coats that I will disembowel come September 23. Unlike the beginning of spring, however, I am much more reluctant to pack away my clothing from the previous season. Fall sweaters are no use in summer, but spring/summer tees and skirts retain their usefulness throughout the colder months. These items are of particular value in my favorite autumnal activity: layering.

Sometimes finding ways to wear your favorite warm weather items can be a challenge. Perhaps you feel uninspired. Perhaps you feel restricted by outdated "fashion rules." Perhaps you've never thought about this topic for a single second. Well, I'm here to help you out (whether you like it or not.)

Here are my best tips for fall-ifying your spring/summer wardrobe:

1. Add a Button Down Shirt or a Vest
Great for the beginning of fall before temperatures get too low. It's an easy way to add warmth to short sleeve tops and dresses

2. Add a Long Sleeved Top
Another great option during the warmer part of fall. I'm not a huge fan of wearing spaghetti strap items this way, but I think it works well for items with thicker sleeves and higher necklines. You can also wear a button down shirt underneath a top.

2.  Add a Pair of Tights
The perfect way to keep wearing your shorter skirts and dresses. Also a great way to conceal unshaven legs... the hair helps keep in the warmth, okay?

Add a Hat or Scarf
Not sold on the turtleneck yet? If so, you mustn't have read yesterday's post. Still not sold? Okay, well embrace your craziness and opt for a slightly less strangulating option- a scarf.
Feeling extra chilly? Throw on a beanie or fedora. A warm head leads to a warmer you all over.

Rock the Button Down Shirt + Sweater or Cardigan Combo
I'm sure we all have this combination pinned in several variations on Pinterest. It's because it is fall/winter outfit perfection. Layering, multiple colors, multiple textures, and a strong sense of put-togtherness. Extra points if you pair this with riding boots.

Add a Blazer or Jacket
That's a no brainer, right? Have fun trying different types of jackets- denim, leather, mixed media, moto, etc.

Wear All the Things
Okay, don't take that too literally. There are limits. But mixing a button down, a sweater, and a vest or blazer creates one very pretty fall look. Or try a vest, button down, and scarf. Throw some tights in there somewhere too. As much as I love layers, you probably don't want more than three. You want to retain some sense of a figure.

And of course, in terms of footwear, ditch those sandals for your cutest boots and booties.

  3. I love that outfit with the striped maxi skirt and the chambray shirt! :) I could see myself wearing something like that now (if only I had a chambray shirt!!!) as it's spring here. We are just doing the opposite, starting to remove all the extra layers! :)

    1. Thanks! That was probably my favorite maternity outfit! I definitely recommend picking up a chambray shirt since they're super versatile. Maybe wait until after summer though!

  4. "That's a ridiculously long time, as anyone who has gestated a tiny human can attest." - I'm dying! hahaha Anyway, taking all of your amazing style tips and writing them down. Ones I really love, and seem to be known to everyone but little old me, is the long sleeve top under a sleeveless top one. Like where have I been? You and a few other of my every day blog reads seem to know what's up. I need to step up my game! Also, I think throwing a cardigan over a plaid button up is a perfect way to make it work a little better for those office days. You know with black jeans? I purchased a few pairs of colorful tights last year for like $1 a piece! They are still in their packaging. I have a pretty plum and mustard shade. I'd love a post on how to dress color tights for fall. (: Besides a basic black dress, I've got nothing. haha
